Saturday 22nd July, 1939

Mother telephoned me to advise that his wedding took place today. She and Father attended, of course, to parade to the world that our family bears no grudge. How simply spiffing of them.

I had imagined the confirmation might devour me but instead a curious emptiness fills me, as though I am nothing but a vast, swirling void on legs. It is difficult to say with any certainty what that indicates, but I’m sure Mother would give it a try were she here.
